Today I'm excited to introduce a new app: Six Again, available on the App Store. The headline feature is NRL scores on your Lock Screen. It uses the Live Activities feature of iOS to let you follow teams or individual matches. The launch coincides with round 1 of the 2026 NRL season, which kicks off in Vegas later today (go the Dragons!)
Like many, I'm obsessed with checking the footy scores. I almost never watch more than a couple of matches a week, but I always want to know what's happening - especially when the Dragons are playing. This has taken different forms over the years. First there were the days of PocketNews: a service where you could request an SMS with the latest scores for a cost of $0.30. If we were out, I would often pester Dad until he'd let me check the score on his phone, only to realise the match wasn't quite over yet, and we'd have to request again a few minutes later. Good use of $0.60 though. Then came mobile phones with an Internet connection, and in the smartphone era, the rise of mobile apps. Push notifications have really been the best innovation here. I bought a Pebble smartwatch around 2014, and my favourite use for it was subtly checking push notifications for score updates. I had a job at the time where I was working weekends and wasn't supposed to pull my phone out, so it was perfect. But we've kind of stalled since then...
Enter Live Activities. In 2022, Apple introduced an iPhone with a Dynamic Island, and in turn, Live Activities. This lets developers put live information (like sport scores) on the Lock Screen of a device. Over the years, they have expanded to display on Apple Watch, CarPlay, and Mac. This is perfect! Live Activities seem like a great way to follow an NRL match.
I kept waiting for the score apps I used to add this feature, until a couple of seasons ago when I started building a version for myself. More recently, I've been able to licence data I can use commercially, and so have spent time polishing it up ready for a release on the App Store.
Six Again doesn't have to replace your existing app. If you like the stats, news, videos etc. offered by your existing app, keep using it. But I hope Six Again has a place in addition - for keeping up with the scores when you can't watch the match. My goal is simply to have the best Live Activities for NRL matches, and to be able to make back the cost of licensing the data for this season. On that note...
Pretty much every live scores app out there is free and supported by ads. For ads to work, people have to open an app often. With Six Again, while the main app does have things to look at (scores, stats, ladder), I'm also happy for you to open it once a season, opt-in to the teams and matches you're interested in, and forget about it until Live Activities appear on your Lock Screen. As such, you get Live Activities for your first 3 matches for free, and then there's an optional $9.99 purchase to unlock Live Activities for matches for the rest of the season. No subscription - it's a one-off purchase that covers the 2026 season.
Live Activities for NRL matches is something I've wanted since first seeing the feature on the iPhone, and I'm excited to be able to share it. If you're at all interested in live scores for the NRL I'd love for you to check it out. I hope you like it. If you do, tell a friend! I'd also love your feedback. There's a Contact button in the app - please use it and let me know what you think!
